THA NEWS
Big Lottery Grant for New Building and Harbour Facilities

Wonderful news for the town of Tobermory and the Isle of Mull.

The Tobermory Harbour Association (THA) has been awarded a grant from the Big Lottery - Investing in Communities Programme. This is brilliant as the project will benefit the whole community and finally complete the regeneration of the Ledaig area of Tobermory.

The THA will now build a community owned multi-purpose building and improve the harbour facilities. The Harbour facilities will add a new 20 berth pontoon extension, a new storage compound and additional landscaping. The building will provide essential services; toilets, showers, laundry, a visitor centre, a meeting room, 8 offices to encourage start-up and small business development, a garage for the storage of the coastguard equipment and a diving compressor.

The pontoon extension will benefit all users of Tobermory Bay , stimulate local marine businesses and secure access to the new fuel berth. Increasing the THA facilities will emphasise Tobermory's position as a premier destination for visitors afloat. Tobermory Harbour is a key stepping stone to other Islands and remote rural communities up and down the Scottish west coast. These facilities will strengthen and encourage links for pleasure or commerce across the water.

Located at the gateway to Tobermory, the new building will be accessible to all and visible across the Bay, creating a focal point within the harbour from both a seaward and landward perspective. The building has been designed by the Edinburgh architect John Renshaw. The concept is stunning with a circular central tower and panoramic meeting room overlooking the harbour. The tower encompasses the local historic links between Mull and the architects of the west coast lighthouses.

The building will generate a sense of community and provide a focus for all the future activities of the THA. The THA is a community owned company dedicated to providing 'Facilities for all'. Facilities which will help to grow local prosperity and promote well-being and devolve responsibility back to the Community.

In addition to the Big Lottery funding the THA has also been provisionally 'grant assisted' by Argyll and the Isles Enterprises , Crown Estate Marine Stewardship Fund and SCHRI who will help fund the renewable energy supply for the building.

Grant assistance has already been provided by Scottish Land Fund and the Community Land Unit to enable us to purchase the site from the Forestry Commission and the Crown Estate.

The THA are also being assisted by Argyll & Bute Council who previously leased the area of land, required for the new building, from the Crown Estate.

Finally thanks must be given to the staff of the THA especially Morag Brown our Projects Officer and to the Directors of the THA who have freely given so much time and professional expertise to make this wonderful project possible.
